Comparative study on the printing of the same polymer, here Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, called ABS, with different 3D printers (filaments and granules)
Are the printed parts comparable to each other?
Does the colour have an impact on the quality of the part?
Is the material purchased equivalent whether it is in the form of filament or granules?
From a mechanical, chemical and surface quality point of view, what are the differences?
This comparative study is based on a simple observation: There are various printers on the market at different prices and there are materials available with the same name. Are they identical?
What is the best choice when you want to invest in printing simple polymers like ABS?
Is the ABS used for this application reusable and therefore recyclable?
Whatever our professional mission: when we develop parts in a design office, when we work in industry and we approve materials, or when we design new prototypes or as maintenance managers who repair and improve machines, we have to print polymer parts, but what is the quality of these parts?
Here the study is not to choose which polymer is for which application but to compare a given polymer, in this case ABS, and compare its properties when printed by different printers and evaluate its recyclability..
A recyclability assessment showed that the 3D printing step does not degrade the material. This type of material (production scrap, support, etc.) could be recycled.
